Every August thousands of partygoers descend to the “Pearl of the Danube” for the annual Sziget Festival. The scenic Obuda is transformed into the Island of Love, with all kinds of fun, from awesome music by some of the biggest names in the game to a whole host of other activities for you to enjoy. Wine Wednesdays

If you missed out on the Wine Wednesdays at the Hungarian National Gallery in July, don’t worry, there are two more organised which will take place at the Vasarely Museum. On the 7th August, the theme will be “Playful” and on the 14th August it will be “Flowery”. There’s live music, guided tours and lectures on all things art, which you can enjoy over a glass of grape goodness. It is an event you simply cannot miss.

Dunapest Festival

At the end of August every year since 2016, the Dunapest Festival hosts a series of events focused on providing people with an enriching cultural insight and experience. Held on the banks of the Danube, the events are centred around reconnecting the importance of the river with the city it runs through. Here you’ll learn about the importance of the Danube in cross-cultural connection, language, arts and the impact it has on the daily life of the people of Budapest. If you folks want to learn about the fascinating Hungarian folk culture, then look no further than the annual Festival Of Folk Arts. In its 32nd year, this event brings together the very best in Hungarian folk culture under one roof. From music, arts and crafts, history, and more importantly food and drink. Learn traditionally significant skills in workshops such as wood carving, instrument making and egg painting. If you’re a foodie then taste traditional Hungarian delicacies and drinks, such as Palinka.

St Stephen’s Day

The 20th of August is one the most important celebratory days on the Hungarian Calendar. Why? Well because it’s the day the great Hungarian nation was founded, by non-other than the man the day is named after King Stephen I. This legendary figure is one the most revered figures and was canonised as a saint in 1083. There are a whole host festivities, starting in the morning with the raising of the Hungarian flag and continuing on all day long, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display over the Danube. It’s quite the spectacle and an experience you can’t-miss if you’re in town.

When people talk about traditional Hungarian tipple, Palinka or Unicum usually get a mention. However, Hungary produces some of the most wonderful wine around, which many people miss. So if you’re in the mood to sample some of the very best wine the country has to offer, then the Junibor Young Wine Festival is the perfect event for you. Every year in the shadows of St Stephens Basilica, the very best young winemakers showcase their amazing produce for you to enjoy. This is held in conjunction with the iconic central wine spot, Divino. So if you’re a wine lover then get it added to your calendar.

Sziget is one of the biggest events of the Calendar, but if something different is what you crave, then check out the UbikEklektik Festival. This community arts event is a creative hotbed bringing together people from all walks of life to enjoy and discuss all things artistic. The framework of the festival follows the Sci-Fi and Mythological story. The event is pretty unique and held in Zebegény, a village just outside of Budapest on the Danube bend.
