Local Businesses and Designers in Buda
Getting a good memento to take from your travels is a must, but finding something unique beyond postcards and fridge magnets is quite the challenge. Our local insider Jordan loves small design concept stores and has found some awesome spots on the Buda side, where you can get something special.
I am a sucker for supporting local businesses and designers! My love for unique products and designs began when I first moved to Budapest and I discovered the amazing underground creatives scene, the only thing is these stores and people can be hard to find. Tucked down side streets and mixed in with mainstream stores these local businesses can be easily missed. For me, I think there’s nothing better than coming back from a holiday with something completely unique from where you travelled designed by a local. I am always discovering new stores that showcase designers work, the ones below are some of my favourites to visit on the Buda side.
Located near Gellert Hill and opposite the university campus, you will find this hidden gem. I love this store for so many reasons, one being it’s hidden within a second-hand store where you’re sure to find some absolute gems at a very reasonable price. When you enter the store behind a white curtain to your right you will find Szia Plus. This store promotes small Hungarian designers by selling their products.
You can find anything from a cool bum bag recycled from an Ikea shopping bag, unique pieces of jewellery, stationery, tote bags with adorable graphics and products that support a cause by being completely eco-conscious. Sometimes the guys and girls behind the counter are creating as you browse through the store as it’s a huge workbench. You can connect with the creatives who brought the pieces to life and get a very unique treasure for your travel collection.
The reason I like the things in this store so much is that they’re all very functional and things that you can use in your day to day life, not something that you buy to forget about.

Located close to the metro station at Gellert and on the same road as Szia+, this store has a very minimalistic and boutique feel to it. I walked past this store so many times and had no idea what was inside until I finally decided to venture in. I’ll come right out and say it, this store is aesthetics heaven. The shop workers will have you envying their style wearing the local designer’s clothes and jewellery. As you work your way around the store, you will find bags, candles, clothes and luscious green plants in pastel pots.
You could easily walk away with everything in this store and there have been many times that I wish I did. Repertory is a concept store for makers and curators and they are always changing up the products and creators that they have on the show. This is a store you can keep coming back to over and over again and always find something different. There’s also sometimes a cute dog greeting you at the door which is an added bonus to an already cool store.

I came across this store one day as it’s only a few doors down from one of my favourite little coffee spots PICNIC. The store is run by the designers who are always up for a chat about their designs and how they came up with them. This store also offers some cool products if you’re looking for a souvenir of Budapest. They have lots of handmade paintings, postcards, notebooks and trinkets for the tourist inside of us all. This store has an underlying theme of sustainability and a lot of the products are made from recycled materials and made in an eco-conscious way.
One of my favourite items in this store all the little netted bags for when you go shopping and need to way your fruit and vegetable. They eliminate you getting little plastic bags for each individual fruit or veg, it’s such a simple product to use but can help make a difference.
This store, unlike the others, is a bit higher in price but it depends on what you’re looking for. The clothes are made out of beautiful linen materials and they have a beautiful collection of hand-woven bags in every shape and size. Their products include coffee beans with exotic flavours, essential oil products, handcrafted wooden pieces, illustrated maps of the city and stationery sets made out of recycled materials. You can also grab a fresh juice or cold fizzy drink from the fridge on a hot summers day. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby.
