London’s Best Local Food – Farmstand
When in a new city and looking for a place to eat, it’s become instinctive for people to search google. However, the restaurants, cafes and bars that appear on top in the search results poorly reflect the identity of a city. The places you’re shown have the highest marketing budget and don’t correlate to the unique experiences you travel for.
These unforgettable experiences can be found at the independent businesses, which are the beating heart of the local community and economy.
This is something we want to change, which is why we pledge to use our platform to help give these amazing local places the spotlight, encouraging people to ditch the more well-known places and instead #KeepItLocal.
In London, one of the businesses supporting our pledge is Farmstand, a local deli that focuses on healthy food made from high quality, fresh and locally sourced ingredients. So we went down to Covent Garden to learn more about the Farmstand story and try out the food for ourselves.
Covent Garden is an iconic area in the heart of London’s West End, the epicentre of the city’s stage and theatre scene. Amidst the hustle and bustle of this busy area on Drury Lane is Farmstand. A new fast-casual that serves some of the city’s most healthy and tasty food, from breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
What’s the story?
Like the food they serve, the story of how Farmstand came to be is quite spectacular. It all began in 2006, when the founder and Wisconsin native Steve Novick, was diagnosed with cancer. Having ridden the high flying, fast-paced world of finance for years, he realised how much he had been neglecting his body.
The diagnosis made him appreciate the importance of, and adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle. Steve spent this time experimenting with fresh, organic plant-based foods to create the ratio which he credits with helping speed up his recovery. Once his cancer was in remission, he made it his mission to bring what had helped him to the masses, and in 2016 Farmstand was born.
The menu is seasonal, but based upon the Farmstand ratio: 80% plant-based, 5% sustainable fish and 15% ethical meat. All of the ingredients used to make the delicious food on offer are high quality, fresh and British. The chicken comes from a family run butchers, the beef from a farm in Wales, the fruit and veg from around greengrocer in Covent Garden and the bread from a bakery from Peckham.
We popped down for breakfast to sample the food on offer, and boy did it live up to the hype. Starting things off with a tasty bowl of avocado, smoked salmon and poached eggs, followed by the delightful tomato salsa and herb-oil-drizzled rye bread. Finished off with a berry yoghurt compote and espresso.
The perfect way to start the day, you can grab and go or take a seat inside the nature-inspired decor which is lined with plant pots and art. A lot of the menu is vegan and gluten-free, so perfect if you have those specific dietary requirements.
However, for you carnivorous cats, they also have some amazing meat and fish dishes on their breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. What makes Farmstand stand out is the bang you get for your buck. The prices are surprisingly cheap for the quality of food on offer. Something other health food restaurants in London have failed to deliver.
