How to spend your Saturday in Bermondsey

How to spend your Saturday in Bermondsey

If you are planning to visit London, one spot you will be recommended is the iconic Borough Market. Located a stone’s throw away from London Bridge station, it’s packed to the rafters of people both local and international piggin out on the copious amounts of quality cuisine and sips on offer.

The sad thing is most people start and end their escapade into the South side of the river here. In reality, there are many upcoming neighborhoods located a stone’s throw away filled with hidden gems most people miss.

So keep an eye out

Last Saturday we went hunting for some amazing spots in Bermondsey, a South London suburb which was voted as the best place to live in London in 2018. After checking out the area ourselves, it’s easy to see how it received this accolade and why you have to add it to your list of places to visit in London next time you’re in London.

Getting there

Thanks to London’s spectacular transport network, Bermondsey is easily accessible no matter what part of London you’re in. The two major stations nearby are London Bridge or Bermondsey, both which can be accessed via overground or underground lines. Or if you’re a bit lazy, like some of our team members, you can always get an Uber.

What to do?

On a weekend this quiet South London suburb comes to life and there is no shortage of fun places to see to suit everyone’s needs. Here are our top picks of things to do in Bermondsey.

Arts & Crafts

If you’re a lover of all things creative then Bermondsey is the place to be. This South London suburb is home to some of Londons best art galleries and creative spaces. Starting off with the super cool Underdog Art Gallery. Underneath the railway arches of London Bridge, this spot showcases the works of the most talented artists, both local and international. If the amazing sculptures and paintings weren’t enough, this spot also has a fully licensed bar and hosts regular live music events. Just around the corner from this creative cavern is the London Glassblowing Gallery.

The brainchild of glass blowing extraordinaire Peter Leyden, this spot has some of the amazing glass art on display. When we popped by we were lucky enough to catch a live glassblowing session, which they host every Saturday afternoons. Other notable places for you to check out are the White Cube, The Design and Textiles Museum, Vitrine Art Gallery. Oh and not forgetting the amazing street art. Notable pieces include the “Rude Kids” by Dotmaster, a local graffiti legend.

Food & Drink

Picking a place to grab a drink or bite is quite a challenge, as Bermondsey has a spectacular selection of places for you to choose from. If you’re starting off the day then we recommend grabbing some breakfast at Hej Cafe. Located on Bermondsey square, this Swedish cafe serves up some cracking coffee and a variety of scrumptious Scandinavian treats for you to try. Another magnificent morning spot you’ve got to go to is the witty named Fuckoffee. Funny by name but serious when it comes to coffee, this unique spot is a must visit if you’re in the area.

If you’re looking for a quick bite to go, then be sure to give Omoide a go. This Japanese food spot serves up tasty sushi bowls which will surely leave your taste buds satisfied. Or if you don’t know what you fancy, head down to Maltby Street Market. Every Saturday this area comes alive with local vendors serving up tantalising treats from across the world. On the menu, you can expect Jerk Chicken, Argentinian Steak, Chinese Chow Mein to British classics such as fish and chips. To wash it all down there are plenty of watering holes to choose from.

Our personal favourite is Jensens Gin, a local gin distillery located underneath some railway arches that doubles up as a bar every Saturday and Sunday. It’s the perfect place to unwind and if you are looking for a perfect souvenir, then grab a bottle of the good stuff to take back with you.

Shopping

If a little bit of retail therapy is what you’re after, then you’ll bloody love Bermondsey. The neighborhood is home to some of the city’s coolest shops where you’re bound to find something unique to satisfy your inner shopaholic.

There are many places you can go to, but we do have some top picks you simply have to check out. The first spot is the beautiful Bermondsey Street boutique called Lovely & Britsh. The products on display here can’t be found anywhere else, no literally, they can’t. The shop sells unique goods which are created by talented people from the area.

So stroll on in, you never know what weird and wonderful things you may find. Imagine if you could support a local charity by shopping, well you can. Located on Bermondsey Street is an upmarket store called the Mary Portas Living and Giving Shop.

By upmarket we don’t mean snobby, all the goods on offer here are by designer brands at very good prices. The proceeds from purchases made inside this store go to a local charity called Save The Children. So be sure to pop down and show some support.

Nightlife

Aint no party like a Bermondsey party, and this isn’t an understatement. The area has so many nighttime haunts for you to choose from. We recommend starting off at Hand and Marigold, a proper old school British boozer frequented by some of Bermondsey’s most beloved locals. Once the drinks are flowing and you want to unleash your inner rockstar, then head down the Underdog Art gallery for one of their famous live rock nights.

If you’re a cocktail type cat, head over to the amazing speakeasy-style bar, Nine Lives and get your paws on something perfect. Located in a Victorian style basement, this place is the mecca for lovers of magnificently mixed drinks. Stroll around and you’re bound to find an amazing place to hang out and unwind.

This is just a taster of what this superb South London suburb has to offer. With the help of locals, we’ve created more detailed itineraries to help you uncover some more gems located in Bermondsey. You’ll be able to follow in their footprints very soon through the Like Locals app, which goes live on both the App and Play Store on the 18th April.

So stay tuned, there are plenty more surprises on the way.
